ED GRANT'S ALL-STATE FRESHMAN TEAMS

The following New Jersey Track all-state freshman teams have been selected on the basis
of all open competition in the state during the past season.

The girls' team is chosen exclusively from varsity competition at the standard 5K
distances. Few top freshman girls compete in stsrictly frosh races except in those early
meets---Cherokee, Magee Memorial, Battle of Monmouth---which are held on a class basis.

It is a bit different with the boys. Unlike the girls, few of them, even some of the best,
ever get to run the 5K distance in open meets. This year, it happens that all eight of the first
team members did run with the varsity, though Robert Molke of Don Bosco, the state's top
frosh, also had some signicant victories in the shorter yearling races.

This also means that there is not the same amount of direct competition as with girls
who are are all going through the four and (mostly) five-week championship campaign with
most of the best winding up in the all-group race (where three frosh were among the 14 girls
who set a record by finishing under 19:00).

As usual, the all-state frosh team (as well as the varsity all-state and various regional
teams) will be included in the next issue of New Jersey Track which will be published around
Dec. 15. Copies, at $2 each, may be ordered from Edward J. Grant, 101 Greenwich Court,
Madison, NJ 07940.
